Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee
(SOCHUM)
The Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) is the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, responsible for addressing issues related to human rights, humanitarian affairs, and social development around the world. SOCHUM focuses on topics such as the protection of fundamental freedoms, the rights of indigenous peoples and minorities, the treatment of refugees, and the elimination of racism and discrimination. The committee works closely with bodies like the UN Human Rights Council and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to promote international cooperation and uphold the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Through debate, negotiation, and the drafting of resolutions, SOCHUM plays a key role in shaping global human rights standards and raising awareness about critical social issues.
